Thanks to a generous grant and partnership from the Center for Geography Education in Oregon (C-GEO), this year’s Festival of Nations will add an education element. It will feature a 7 x 14 foot World Map to be used as an event activity. The Festival is a place for C-GEO to further its mission to “improve and sustain geography education in Oregon.” Through C-GEO’s resources, the festival will offer a ‘world cake/candy walk’, puzzle maps, and other geography-related activities.
C-GEO is an outstanding resource for Oregon teachers and families who understand the necessity of geography education in today’s interconnected world. Located in the Geography Department at Portland State University, C-GEO provides professional development opportunities for Pre-K-12 teachers in Oregon through summer institutes. These programs often include foreign and domestic travel, an annual GeoFest conference, and other workshops and activities. C-GEO provides resources to Oregon teachers, including free online student atlases and geography-related curricular materials such as model lessons. C-GEO also provides geography-oriented grants to teachers for hosting community events at their schools, travel for professional development, and purchasing geography instructional materials.
C-GEO recently published the Atlas of Oregon Climate and Climate Change. The 63-page atlas features extensive data-driven information and pages of colorful maps and graphics. It is available for free download on the C-GEO website.
The C-GEO website, www.pdx.edu/geography-education, features many other free resources, including geography activity books for students and teachers, the award winning Student Atlas of Oregon (available in both English and Spanish), and a manual for hosting a Family Geography Night in your school or community. The site announces professional development and grant opportunities for teachers, and you can read the Geobytes newsletter there.
C-GEO works cooperatively with other educational, professional, civic and corporate organizations that share its goals and concerns about geographic education in Oregon’s Pre-K-12 schools.
C-GEO is happy for the opportunity to support the geography outreach efforts of People-Places-Things LLC and the Division Midway Alliance at the Festival of Nations Celebration
