An alchemist artist, David Gonzo began his craft in the steel and welding trade 18 years ago in his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M. His start in the world of steel began as a job working on overseas storage containers. (Is it a wonder that he’s part of the DMA trash-can project?)

He moved to San Diego, where he dove into steel art on the weekends in the structural steel shop he worked at. In California, he set up his first art business, Iron Insanity, and continued growing his knowledge and passion for his art, which became his sanctuary.

Feeling a pull for a needed change, David decided to quit, cash in his retirement and move to British Columbia to concentrate on steel sculpture. But after six months he again felt the pull of change, and packed up his things and headed back south into the States, Portland to be precise. In the Rose City, he landed a welding job. But eventually, his inner alchemist prompted him to take a leap of faith and leave his job to pursue his passion of transforming metal into art. He now runs David Gonzalez Sculpture.

Today, David is surrounded by talented artists as a member within the Pacific Northwest Sculptors group. He has received five awards for his sculptures at the Curious Gallery exhibition held in Portland and has provided metal art to many professional establishments throughout the States and private clients.

“I have been very blessed with the people and friends and I’ve connected with through out my life journey,” he says.

You can see his work at Argyle Winery, Sculptors Gallery, Lovecraft bar, Electric Chair hair salon, Hilton Hotel, Invoke along with Well & Verne, among others.
