The design for DMA’s Trashcans
During DMA’s visioning process, the Capital Improvement Committee heard the community’s voice loud and clear, “The district needs trash cans.” The committee collaborated with TriMet, Midway businesses and PDC to clean up the district. Committee member Travis Fanucchi walked the district and determined strategic trash can locations. Travis targeted areas with large trash accumulation near already maintained TriMet stops or businesses that would help maintain them.
The committee commissioned East Portland artist Dave Gonzales owner of Dave Gonzo Sculpture to design, create and install trash cans throughout the district. The trash cans are in production now and will be installed by September.
Cans are powder coated with a graffiti protection coat and each side has cutouts of the Midway logo, Mount Hood and two roses with perforated metal behind the designed cutouts. The enclosures are green as a symbol of Midway’s Greening Program.
