Ten weeks of Fall Civics classes for the Myanmar community begin Oct. 12 and run through Dec. 14. The Wednesday classes are at the Midland Library, Southeast 122nd and Stark, 6-7:30 p.m. These classes help immigrants and refugees prepare for U.S. citizenship.
We need volunteers to:
- Help in the classroom
- Work with students on basic literacy, reading skill development, and citizenship vocabulary development
- Assist students learning how to use a tablet to expand their learning options
- Practice interviews with students (by appointment)
- Help with program administration
- Help with childcare
This year, we are also seeking people willing to work one-on-one or with a small group of three to four students. These sessions will take place on Saturday mornings, also at the Midland Library.
You don’t need to be an expert to volunteer but you must be:
- Interested in working with pre-literate people of all ages from Southeast Asia
- Able to commit to all 10 sessions – (one absence is probably OK).
- Able to work one-to-one, in small groups or as an aide for large group activities
There is a “convening meeting” this Saturday, Oct. 1, 10 a.m-12:30 p.m.. This session is optional for volunteers, but you are certainly welcome to come. Contact Janell M. Lee me for the location address.
If you are interested, contact Janell at 503-740-0059
